The inaugural week of the Fall semester at Little Ashcan has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Our] artists delved into the fascinating realm of contours, a cornerstone of artistic expression. Understanding contours is like unlocking a secret language in the world of art, enabling students to capture the essence of their subjects with precision.
In the art world, contours refer to the outline or edge of a shape. They define the boundaries of an object, making it recognizable. This week, our young artists immersed themselves in the intricacies of these lines, learning how to articulate form and structure through their drawings.
A highlight of this week's curriculum was the exploration of blind contours. This technique involves drawing an object or subject without looking at the paper. Instead, the artist focuses solely on the subject, allowing their hand to move in synchrony with their observations. The result? A raw, unfiltered representation that beautifully captures the essence of the subject.
Armed with an array of pens, our young artists ventured into the world of textures and shapes. Each pen stroke became a deliberate choice, capturing the subtleties of the objects before them. From the sleek curves of a vase to the jagged edges of a shell, every contour was meticulously etched onto the paper.
As the first week draws to a close, we're excited to announce that the coming week will introduce a new medium: charcoal. This versatile tool promises a whole new dimension of expression. Students will learn to wield charcoal's bold strokes, creating dramatic and dynamic compositions that push the boundaries of their artistic prowess.
